Questions and Answers

What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a process by which the discolouration of enamel and dentine are lightened.
What causes my teeth to discolour?
There are many causes of tooth discolouration. Some of the most common include the consumption of highly coloured foods (beetroot, sweets) and drinks (tea, coffee, red wine). Antibiotics at a young age, aging, smoking and trauma can also result in discolouration.
How long will the treatment last?
Indefinitely as you simply touch up the results once or twice a year. Without repeat treatments the things that stained your teeth before will start to discolour them again.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes. Clinical studies have shown that bleaching with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of a dentist is safe for both teeth and gums.
How does the tooth whitening work?
The active ingredient (either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide) is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentine and the stains are "dissolved".
What are the side effects?
For the majority of patients there are none. However, some will experience temporary sensitivity. Your dentist can advise on the best ways to manage any temporary sensitivity.
How long does it take?
Results are obtained within just 30 minutes giving instant satisfaction.
What if I have veneers or crowns, will they change colour?
No. Restoration work is usually matched to your tooth colour. Any that are visible in the smile region may need to be replaced two to four weeks after the treatment.
